  20. TIFNY is a 32 bit multi-threaded compatible application which 
  21. runs on both Windows 95 and Windows NT4.0 platforms. TIFNY will 
  22. not operate correctly on Windows 3.x, 3.11, or Windows NT
  23. versions less than 4.0.

  27. A SHAREWARE PRODUCT

  29. TIFNY is a "complete" program, i.e.: it performs all of the 
  30. major functions normally expected. It is *not* 'crippleware'.

  32. It is copyrighted (as opposed to uncopyrighted software which is 
  33. "public domain").

  35. TIFNY may be copied for others to try, but a registration fee  
  36. is required as a condition of continued use beyond the trial 
  37. usage period arbitrarily determined by the author. TIFNY is 
  38. not "Time Stamped" and does not stop functioning after a 
  39. specific date.

  46. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

  50. FILLING OUT THE REGISTRATION FORM

  52. From the Product menu in TIFNY, choose the menu item 
  53. "Registration" to bring up the Registration form. Enter your 
  54. name, address, email-id, and telephone number. If you are paying 
  55. by credit card, fill out the credit card information. American
  56. Express, VISA, and MasterCard are welcomed.

  58. BY MODEM IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA
  59.  
  60. You can send your registration securely by modem. First, 
  61. shutdown your internet dialer, or any other application, such as 
  62. a fax manager that maybe using the modem. If you are located in 
  63. the United States or Canada, you can use our toll free telephone 
  64. number to send us your registration. You do not need to edit the 
  65. text field, "Call TIFNY At". Our toll free number will already 
  66. be filled in. Press the button, "Send By Modem" to complete the 
  67. transaction.

  97. DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT
  98.  
  99. TIFNY connects to any NNTP compatible news server, and will 
  100. automatically download and catalog UUENCODED pictures to your 
  101. hard disk. Images are placed in user defined subdirectories 
  102. by default. Images may be directed to an alternate location by 
  103. setting the full path as the search name, for example, 
  104. e:\fineart. Image information is stored in a Microsoft Access 
  105. Database called tifny.mbd, located in the TIFNY installation 
  106. directory, usually c:\Program Files\TIFNY, unless another 
  107. location was specified during installation.
  108.  
  109. TIFNY can showcase images logged in the database, while 
  110. immediately displaying new downloads as they occur. The user 
  111. defines search criteria with optional deny filters to select 
  112. news articles images for download. TIFNY is able to deny images 
  113. by series, authors, organizations or keywords in the subject 
  114. header, and avoid redundant searching and duplicate downloading, 
  115. saving you time and bandwidth. As users build their deny list, 
  116. TIFNY "learns" to download only the best images.

  118. Use TIFNY to navigate the newsgroups, hands-free, and discover 
  119. it's photographic treasures while automatically filtering 
  120. unwanted spammers, offensive postings and cross-postings. 
  121. Retrieve USENET newsgroup images that are filtered and offer 
  122. graphics you deem relevant and exciting.

  125. Windows 95 and has been tested under Windows95 & NT4.0.

  164. JPEG images posted to the newsgroups encoded in Base64, can now 
  165. be read by TIFNY.

  167. * CROSS POSTING THRESHOLD LEVEL ADDED TO PREFERENCES
  168. Authors who cross post to "too" many newsgroups is an indication 
  169. the image was cross posted outside of its theme. This is 
  170. otherwise known as an image spammer. Setting the threshold value 
  171. to 0, allows TIFNY to download an image that has been arbitrarily 
  172. cross posted. Setting the threshold value to 4, for example, 
  173. will download an image only if it has been cross posted to four 
  174. or less newsgroups. This feature will virtually eliminate any 
  175. spammed image from being downloaded.

  177. * SPECIAL EFFECTS TOGGLE ADDED TO PREFERENCES
  178. Special Effects added for image segues. This slows TIFNY down, 
  179. but adds dramatic effects to image transitions.
  180.  
  181. * TEXT WARNING TOGGLE ADDED TO PREFERENCES
  182. If the toggle button "Text" is off and the "text warning" box in 
  183. preferences is checked, then the "Text" button will blink to 
  184. indicate the image has associated text.
  185.  
  186. * DELETE QUEUE DEPTH ADDED TO PREFERENCES
  187. TIFNY does delete pictures from the hard drive, but not 
  188. immediately. Images "marked" for deletion are placed in a "to be 
  189. deleted queue" and its length is set in preferences. The 
  190. queue operates on a first in first out basis, meaning when the 
  191. queue is full, the "oldest" image marked for delete will now be 
  192. deleted from the hard drive. This way you will have the 
  193. opportunity to retrieve the most recent images marked for 
  194. deletion. When TIFNY exits, any images marked for deletion will 
  195. now be removed from the hard drive.
  196.  
  197. * LOOP BUTTON ADDED TO MAIN WINDOW
  198. Setting this toggle "on" begins a never ending search.  
  199. When a search has completed and the "Loop" button is made 
  200. active, TIFNY waits 1 minute, and begins the same search again. 
  201. TIFNY continues to "Loop" until the "Stop" button is pressed or 
  202. the "Loop" button is made inactive.
  203.  
  204. * GO BACK BUTTON ADDED TO MAIN WINDOW
  205. Start the next search at the first message available in the 
  206. newsgroup.  If this toggle is "on", the next search will visit 
  207. every message available in each newsgroup in the search, even if 
  208. we read it before. The current position in the newsgroups will 
  209. NOT be affected.  You will be able to start subsequent searches 
  210. from where you left off, when then toggle is "off".  Images seen 
  211. previously will be accepted and all other filters will be 
  212. applied. This feature is similar to other news readers that can 
  213. mark articles as "unread", but TIFNY does this only for the 
  214. duration of when the toggle is "on".

  216. * TEXT BUTTON ADDED TO MAIN WINDOW
  217. Setting this toggle "on", dims the image, if there is associated text. 
  218. Then layers the text on to the dimmed image. If the toggle button "Text" 
  219. is off and the "text warning" box in preferences is checked, then the 
  220. "Text" button will blink to indicate the image has associated text.

  222. * POST NOW INCLUDES TEXT
  223. Posting news articles to a newsgroup can now include associated 
  224. text with the image. The "Comments" text box in the "TIFNY 
  225. Posting" form will be associated with the posted image.

  235. INSTALLATION NOTES
  236.  
  237. 1). Make sure you have installed the TIFNY system support 
  238. file called tifnysys.exe FIRST!!!! If you don't run this file 
  239. before setup.exe, TIFNY may not run correctly.  Since TIFNY is 
  240. using the latest software technology, OCX program modules, 
  241. Windows 95 must register these software elements in a prescribed 
  242. order. If you ran setup.exe first and then ran tifnysys.exe, 
  243. TIFNY may not run correctly. To correct this, just start over 
  244. again, and run tifnysys.exe first, followed by setup.exe.

  246. TO RUN TIFNY
  247.  
  248. * Run the program (from the Program Manager or Start menu).
  249. * Set the Server address to point to your NNTP server.  TIFNY
  250. will guess an appropriate server based on existing settings in
  251. your registry.

  255. FILE DESCRIPTIONS
  256.  
  257. tifny.mdb is a Microsoft Access database of image information. 
  258. The images are not stored in the database, but on your hard disk. 
  259. Location: TIFNY installation directory.
  260.  
  261. <filename>.jpg files are images file downloaded from the 
  262. newsgroups and placed in subdirectories by default. Alternate 
  263. directories can be specified in the "Search->Define Search" menu 
  264. in the "Directory" input box, for example, e:\animals. 
  265.  
  266. <filename>.tifny" files contain the text which came with the 
  267. associated image and are stored in the same directory as the 
  268. jpg files.
  269.  
  270. tifny.log Log file for program trace of exceptions. Location: 
  271. TIFNY installation directory.

  273. remove.exe will remove TIFNY from your system. Unwise. Location: 
  274. TIFNY installation directory.
